Jet2.com increases presence in the Canary Islands

Jet2.com, the British low-cost airline, is increasing its presence in the Canary Islands with the establishment of an aircraft base at Lanzarote Airport.

Representatives of the local government, tourism officials, and Jet2.com staff were on hand at the Museo Aeronáutico where the announcement was made that Jet2.com would be basing a Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Lanzarote Airport from November 2013 onwards.

A New Aircraft Base in Lanzarote

The aircraft is being based at the airport in preparation for the 2013-2014 winter season when Jet2.comwill increase the number of flights between the airport and the United Kingdom. Ian Doubtfire, Managing Director of Jet2.com, said that the airline is pleased with the ongoing support received from local government and tourism agencies. The support has enabled Jet2.com to gradually increase the number of direct flights it offers between its bases in the United Kingdom and Lanzarote. Doubtfire highlighted the significance for the airline as well as the local economy. That sentiment was echoed by San Ginés Pedro Gutierrez, President of the Cabildo de Lanzarote who reaffirmed the importance of the airline’s presence and the connectivity it provides to the island. In 2012, Jet2.com was awarded the “Isla de Lanzarote 2012” award by the Lanzarote Tourist Board for its commitment in helping to boost tourism to the island.

The news coincided with the launch of a new service offered twice weekly by Jet2.com between Blackpool and Lanzarote on May 29. The 2,900 kilometre route will be operated by one of the airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline already services the island directly from bases at Leeds, Glasgow, Manchester, Belfast, East Midlands, and Newcastle. The airline has seen consistent growth in the market and much success on its routes boasting a 92.8% load factor, one of the highest rates of any airline serving the region. In 2012 alone, Jet2.com offered nearly 177,000 seats between Lanzarote and the United Kingdom. That represented an increase of 42% during the winter season over the previous year. Capacity is expected to increase by 30% for the summer of 2013.   The airline intends to further increase capacity in 2014 by an additional 35%.

Largest Ever Expansion of Service this Winter

Last year, Jet2.com announced that it would be increasing capacity during the 2013 winter season to the Canary Islands of Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria by 40% representing an additional 86,000 seats. The airline stated that it would be the largest schedule ever offered by Jet2.com between the United Kingdom and the Canary Islands. According to Steve Heapy, Jet2.com Chief Commercial Officer, by increasing services to the Canary Islands, more passengers will be able to take advantage of great value holidays, convenient flight times, and fantastic destinations that provide the ideal family holiday for those wishing to escape winter. “Offering the Canary Islands as year round destinations at the times our customers want to travel is great news for sun seekers,” says Heapy. “Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria are already incredibly popular across our Northern UK bases and we expect these expanded services to be a success.” In addition to flights, Jet2.com sells holiday packages through their holiday division, Jet2holidays. By purchasing a packaged holiday, travellers can take advantage of further discounted rates that include flights, accommodation, resort transfers, and baggage allowance all bundled together. There are also other options that you can add on including car hire, airport parking, in-flight meals and holiday travel insurance.
